GPS for Cars

GPS for cars are being used by more and more people from all walks of life to enhance their daily driving experience.  These systems are small personal electronic devices whose main purpose is to help drivers navigate the maze of highways and streets that fill our cities and countries.  Sales of aftermarket GPS for cars have been on the steady rise over the last few years and don’t look to be stopping.  Better display screens, highly improved precision and usability of maps, additional features such as safety buttons and traffic notifications, and speech to text recognition are all parts of why GPS for cars are getting more popular every day.

The GPS units are often times mounted to the dashboard of your car or even through a suction cup mechanism to the windshield.  Installation can be done yourself and usually only takes a minute.  Most GPS devices run on direct power rather than batteries, so you will have to connect a provided cable to your car’s power outlet.  Once you have it up and running you can start to enjoy the abundance of features that it possesses!

  • Touch the “Home” button and get instant directions from any location to your local residence.
  • Type in a location and navigate to it by either on screen directions or have them read to you out loud right from your GPS!
  • Capture all of your route information such as average speed, time en route, and directions.
  • Traffic backup notifications and alerts to help avoid those sticky traffic jams.
  • Points of interest features that can automatically show you all restaurants, gas stations, ATM’s etc. in the immediate area.
  • Some GPS for cars offer hands-free cellular calling using a wireless connection to the GPS unit.
  • MP3 player which can utilize your unit’s speaker system or plug in your own headphones.

Buying a GPS unit

Buying a GPS for your vehicle can be a daunting task for even the most tech-savvy consumers.  When purchasing most consumer electronics you have the luxury of “test-driving” the product before you buy.  Whether it’s listening to a speaker system, watching a flat screen television, or playing a video game console it’s typical that you can get a feel for the device.  This may not always be the case while on the hunt for GPS for cars.  They are usually sealed in plastic wrap and even if they are on display it can be hard to determine how they’ll actually perform mounted to the dash of your car.

Most GPS purchases occur because you experience a friend or family member’s while on the road and the benefits are made so obvious you can’t resist.  This is a great way to try out just one model of GPS, but to really decide for yourself you must have a way to determine which GPS system is right for you.  Here are a few pointers that will get you started on your way solving the difficulties of buying a model that fits your needs at the best price.

1.  Examine the layout of your car.  Most GPS for cars are installed on either your dashboard or windshield and will include a monitor that displays map and route information.  Be sure that an installation will not block any car features such as controls, air vents, etc.  Also be sure it will not make exiting or entering the passenger seat uncomfortable.

2.  Decide how often you will be using your GPS unit.  Cheap units can be plugged into a cigarette lighter and stowed away in your glove compartment.  Better devices will need a more permanent location.

3.  Select a device that gives you voice as well as visual directions.  It is very useful while driving to not have to look away from the road.  Not only is it useful but extremely safe as well.  Imagine instead of consulting a mini map in the peripheral of your vision you are instead instructed by voice exactly when to turn or change lanes.  Vocal directions are a very convenient feature.

4.  Pick a system that shows points of interest.  Most GPS for cars will include locations of the nearest restaurants, gas stations, hotels, ATM’s, etc.  This is another very convenient feature that should not be overlooked.

5.  Finally, once all of your specifications have been met be sure to read reviews and price out different units according to your budget.  Most stores will have demo units that you can experience in person.  You can find all sorts of reviews such as this online.

Good luck!
